Hornbill Lodge is more than just a business — it’s a family home and a living legacy.
Owned and lovingly managed by Cobie and Muriel Els, the lodge has been welcoming guests since 1985, though the property itself has been in the family for generations.

Cobie, Muriel, and their children live on-site, creating a warm, personal atmosphere where guests are more than visitors — they’re part of the extended Hornbill family.
Their daily presence ensures every detail is cared for, and their genuine hospitality leaves a lasting impression.

Below, you’ll find a glimpse into the personalities and passions of each family member — the heart and soul of Hornbill Lodge.

The Dad (Level 1 Paramedic)
If you spot a man in “kakies” surveying the property like a general inspecting his troops, that’s Cobie Els Snr. He’s been wearing the same style since before it was cool — and let’s be honest, he’s not changing now.
Cobie doesn’t just run the show — he is the show. From fixing fences to firing up the braai, he’s everywhere at once, making sure things run smoother than a well-oiled tractor. Staff know better than to question his methods — especially when he’s armed with a coffee and a plan.

Son#1 (Our level 3 Paramedic)
Born in 1985, Cobie Els Jnr. is the kind of guy who can change a diaper, design a building, butcher a hog, balance the books, pitch manure, program a computer, and still whip up a decent meal — all before lunch. He’s been described as a walking toolbox, a one-man task force, and occasionally, “the guy who just gets it done.”

In a world obsessed with specialization, Cobie proudly flies the flag for versatility. His motto? “Specialization is for insects.” Jack of all trades? Absolutely. Master of some? Also yes.

He’s not an executive chef in Sandton, and he’s fine with that. What he is, is someone who thrives in small teams, adapts on the fly, and sees learning as a superpower. Whether it’s solving a problem or starting a new one (for fun), Cobie’s always in motion — and Hornbill Lodge is his playground.

Son#3 (Level 1 Paramedic)
Born in 2000 and already slicing his way through the culinary world, Lance Neo Els — affectionately known as Bokkie — is Hornbill Lodge’s youngest chef and full-time flavor enthusiast. After earning his chef qualification in 2024, he dove straight into the kitchen with energy, ambition, and a knife roll that rarely rests.

While working full-time at Hornbill, Bokkie is also cooking up plans for his own food venture. On his off days (if you can find him taking one), he’s still lending a hand around the lodge — because once you’re part of the Hornbill crew, you’re always in the mix.

With creativity on the plate and hustle in his stride, Bokkie’s just getting started — and trust us, you’ll want a seat at his table.

The Heartbeat of Hornbill
Muriel isn’t just the heart and soul of the family — she’s the glue, the sparkle, and the calm in the occasional storm. While Cobie may call the shots, Muriel makes sure those shots are on target, on time, and delivered with grace.
She brings a much-needed feminine touch to the family business — balancing rustic charm with thoughtful details, smoothing out the chaos, and somehow knowing exactly what needs doing before anyone else does. If Hornbill Lodge had a compass, it would point to Muriel.

Son#2
Born in 1988, D’Arcy Els is back in South Africa after a flavorful stint in Scotland and England, where he sharpened his skills, stirred up some buzz, and chased the dream of Michelin-level mastery.
With a passion for food that borders on obsession and a résumé that includes working under some of SA’s top chefs — plus a few TV appearances for good measure — D’Arcy is no stranger to the heat of the kitchen.

Now home, he’s recharging, refining, and ready for his next international culinary challenge. Whether it’s plating perfection or pushing boundaries, D’Arcy’s journey is far from over — and the next chapter promises to be delicious.

Granddaughter
Born in 2004, Kaylene Kimiko Els is the daughter of D’Arcy and Rene, and the newest culinary talent to emerge from the Hornbill family tree.
After completing her chef qualification in 2024, she’s been exploring her own path beyond the lodge — sharpening her skills, discovering her style, and preparing for whatever delicious challenge comes next.

Though she’s not currently working at Hornbill, her roots run deep, and her passion for food is unmistakable. With creativity in her veins and a legacy behind her, Kaylene’s journey is just beginning — and it’s bound to be flavorful.
Grandson
Born to Cobie SW and Storm Roux, Benjamin Els — better known as Benjy — is the youngest member of the Hornbill crew and already making his mark. After matriculating in 2025, he’s gearing up to begin his chef qualification soon, adding another layer of flavor to the family legacy.

Until then, you’ll find Benjy all over the property — helping his dad with everything from maintenance to mischief, or leading guests on guided hikes every Saturday and Sunday with the enthusiasm of someone who knows every rock and root by name.

He’s got the energy, the charm, and soon, the culinary chops to match. Hornbill’s next generation is already on the move — and Benjy’s leading the way, one trail (and one recipe) at a time.
